In your view, should the FDA achieve a balance of public protection without being overly regulatory?

Its efforts to protect the health of the public by controlling access to pharmaceuticals and devices and to enforce food safety standards have placed the FDA in the crosshairs of many opponents and critics. FDA controversies in the late 1990s and early 2000s include the recall of Fen-Phen prescribed for the treatment of obesity; a recommendation that the drug Rizulin used to treat diabetes be recalled; concerns raised about the use of Viagra with patients who are being treated for heart disease; and a proposal to regulate tobacco as a narcotic. Who are some of the FDA’s major critics or opponents? In your view, should the FDA achieve a balance of public protection without being overly regulatory? If so, how might this be accomplished?
