What's up with the arm sleeve basketball players wear?

For a while it seemed to just be an Allen Iverson thing. Now several players in the NBA and college wear the sleeve that goes from their bicep to forearm, usually on just one arm. Is this a fashion statement or does the sleeve serve a practical purpose? Is it something to wipe sweat away with? It looks silly so I want to know why some players wear it, and others don't.
